THE J. LOHR STORY
Fifty years ago, Jerry Lohr embarked on a career change. What followed would reshape the landscape of the California wine industry and create one of the country’s most popular wine brands.
In the late 1960s, Jerry Lohr began an extensive investigation of California grape growing regions – searching for the ideal location for his first vineyard. Jerry was raised on a South Dakota farm; his agricultural roots armed him with an innate sense for the relationship between climate, soil, and location. His research and instincts led him to the Central Coast, an area just beginning to explore its potential for winegrowing.
PASO ROBLES
The Lohr family’s relationship with Paso Robles started in the 1980s when Jerry Lohr identified the region’s potential for growing world-class Bordeaux varietals. Today, the family and team sustainably farm more than 2,600 acres of estate vineyards throughout five of Paso Robles’ sub-AVAs. And while we’re perhaps best known for our J. Lohr Estates Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon and our J. Lohr Hilltop Cabernet Sauvignon, our portfolio also includes many winery and member-exclusive small-lot gems that are only available here, at the source. We invite you to visit us to enjoy dramatic vineyard views, warm hospitality, and sensational wines in our comfortable, farmhouse-inspired tasting room.
SAN JOSE
Jerry Lohr first opened the J. Lohr San Jose Wine Center’s doors to the public in 1974; it was the first winery since Prohibition to open in downtown San Jose. Jerry utilized his custom homebuilding knowledge, even saving the original brick façade from the structure’s early history as the old Falstaff Brewery, to create a welcoming and cozy tasting room. Today, almost 50 years later, the limestone floors, granite countertops, redwood beams, and other Lohr family touches are still as beautiful as ever. New to the space for 2022 and beyond is inviting and comfortable furniture – encouraging our members and guests to linger in this urban oasis and savor our J. Lohr small-lot, single-vineyard, and club-exclusive offerings.
